SMA SPEAKS ESPANOL

By Barbara Washington

As a service project, the Spring Mountains Association has provided the law enforcement officers and the Kyle Canyon information center with a brochure featuring forest regulations and emergency telephone numbers written in Spanish. These brochures were prepared with the assistance of the Honorary Mexican Consulate Office in Las Vegas. Mr. Vega donated his staff's time to review and correct the rough draft prepared with a translator program. Charles Washington and Danny Hawkes worked out the format, and the SMA donated the printing.

More Spanish-language brochures are in the works. The next one will be "A Brief History Of The Spring Mountains".

OVER 300 TREES & SHRUBS PLANTED AT KYLE CANYON DURING ANNUAL PLANT-A-PINE DAY

By Kathy Speck

Soroptimist of Greater Las Vegas, in conjunction with the US Forest Service, Southwest Trailhikers, Spring Mountains Association and Mirage Voice Volunteers, sponsored the Annual Soroptimist Plant-A-Pine Day. The 12th annual event was held on Saturday, June 28 at Kyle Canyon Campground on Mt. Charleston.

More than 36 volunteers helped over 200 Woods roses, 70 Mountain Mahoganies, and 30 Ponderosa Pines take root in the soils of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area of the Toiyabe National Forest. Our SMA was represented and did a great job of working hard.

For 12 years, volunteer tree planters have given Mother Nature a helping hand in reforesting developed recreation sites in Kyle Canyon and Lee Canyon. In the first five years of the event more than 1,500 baby Ponderosa Pines were planted by volunteers in McWilliams Campground in Lee Canyon. In the last seven years, volunteers have planted nearly 2,500 foliage plants and trees at the newly renovated Kyle Canyon Campground.

This year we also checked the drip water system that was installed last year by the Mirage Voice Volunteers. It has been helping to water over 400 Ponderosa Pine seedlings. New lines were also installed.
