FOREST SERVICE DISTRICT RANGER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

    By Barbara Washington

By Dee Gardner, Forest Service Public Affairs Officer

LAS VEGAS . . . District Ranger Jim Tallerico has announced his retirement from the Forest Service after 25 years of federal service. Tallerico has been the District Ranger for the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area (SMNRA), which is part of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forests, since January 1993. His retirement was effective December 4, 1997.

Tallerico joined the Forest Service in 1975 after serving in Vietnam. He has worked in Utah, Alaska, and Nevada in the fields of Land Management Planning and Recreation Management. He plans to stay in Las Vegas. Assistant Forest Supervisor Alan Pinkerton will assume Tallericos responsibilities until a new District Ranger is hired within the next few months.

"I am proud to have been here to see the designation of this unique environment as a National Recreation Area (NRA) and to participate in the development of the management plan for the SMNRA. It is an honor to have worked with a community that has been so involved in getting this land designated an NRA, and has continued to participate in planning decisions with the Forest Service," stated Tallerico.

"I am equally proud of the dedicated and knowledgeable staff that I have worked with over the past five years. Together we have developed and enjoyed relationships with many groups that appreciate the Spring Mountains. I would also like to express my deepest thanks for the enormous help we receive from volunteers. Their commitment enables us to achieve great things for the SMNRA," he continued.

"It has been an honor to have the responsibility and privilege of caring for the land entrusted to me. I look forward to retiring in Las Vegas, knowing that this special area is so close," stated Tallerico.
