The Spring Mountains ECHOPresident's CornerBobbye Fitzgibbons
The Meet The Mountain tours are an excellent way for both beginner and experienced outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy and learn more about these magnificent mountains which are so close to a now heavily populated area. On Saturday, September 6, 1997, the annual Festival In The Pines, sponsored by the SMA, will be held at the Las Vegas Ski & Snow Board Resort at the top of Lee Canyon, and the Mt. Charleston Alpine Village in Kyle Canyon. Plans are in the works to coordinate with the U.S. Forest Service in creating an interpretive trail to further educate visitors to the mountains. A tentative location is the trail off of Kyle Canyon to Fletcher Springs. The Association also staffs the Kyle Canyon Visitor Center on weekends, on a voluntary basis, providing information and answering questions. Most brochures on the mountain including the hiking trails, are free. Some articles are for sale, such as maps, t-shirts, caps, insignias, miniature Smoky Bears, etc. All proceeds from this sale go to promote wholesome activities in the mountain and to assist the U.S. Forest Service in any needed projects. Membership in the Association is only $10 per individual, $15 for a family, $25 for an organization, and $250 for a life membership. Membership includes the Spring Mountain Association Publication, the "ECHO". An application for membership is on the last page of the "ECHO". Since ours is a government "of the people, for the people and by the people" it is our pleasure, as well our duty, to help protect, preserve and manage the Spring Mountain National Recreation Area of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest in such a way that it will remain in its pristine beauty for future generations to enjoy.
