The Spring Mountains ECHO

SMA Earth Day Activities

Barbara Washington

On April 19th, Jack Borden, Pat & Bobbye Fitzgibbons, John O'Donnell, Tricia Scaggs and Charles & Barbara Washington staffed our Earth Fair booth at Sunset Park. We distributed lots of literature about the Spring Mountains, the SMA, and the Festival In The Pines. So many people are unaware of the location of the Spring Mountains that next year we may consider adding a map display. Additionally, we sold our imprinted products which helped to cover the cost of the space.

Jack Borden put together a presentation for the school children at the Earth Day Community Action Recycling Program (CARP) event at UNLV on April 22nd. In addition to an informative talk and an illustrated map, he had "The Brief History of the Spring Mountains", ECHO's, and Festival In The Pines flyers for handouts.

Thanks to all who helped out. Community education and awareness of the Spring Mountains were goals that we met at these events. If you know of opportunities for the Association to promote these goals, please contact Bobbye Fitzgibbons at 382-2721.

Actual comments received in 1996 from the Bridger Wilderness registration sheets and comment cards

  • Trails need to be wider so people can walk while holding hands.
  • Trail needs to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill.
  • Escalators would help on steep uphill sections.
