1 critically injured in suspected DUI crash early Friday in western Las Vegas

One person is in critical condition after a suspected DUI crash on eastbound Charleston Boulevard near Rampart Boulevard early Friday, Las Vegas police said.

Metro Lt. C.J. Jenkins said an apparently intoxicated driver rear-ended another car at a high speed about 12:30 a.m., then tried to flee from the scene on foot but was detained by an off-duty security guard who handed him over to police when they arrived.

The driver, 45-year-old Paul Adams, failed a field sobriety test and was booked into Clark County Detention Center on one count of driving under the influence resulting in substantial bodily harm and one felony hit-and-run charge.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit, 19-year-old Francis Manalo, was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. A police spokesman initially told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that Manalo had died but later said that information was incorrect.

The eastbound lanes of Charleston, closed for the crash investigation, have reopened.
