Eating for a good cause
By Len Butcher
If you like food and you want a real treat, but a bit away from the hustle and bustle and fancy restaurants on the Strip, you just might want to mark November 16 on your calendar. That's when students from the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration will host the fifth annual Friends of Nevada Banquet at UNLV. Not only will you be served fine cuisine, but you'll be helping a good cause, as the banquet is a fundraiser for Poverello House, a non-profit organization providing shelter to the homeless in North Las Vegas and Henderson. All proceeds from the banquet go to the Poverello House
I have attended this event several times and I have to give two thumbs up to the UNLV Hotel College students who are responsible for all aspects of the event -- from the planning and execution, to the design and preparation of the menu items and all associated service. Don't know who all their teachers are, but hats off to them as these students perform as well as most professionals working in established eateries.
To get you started, there's an open bar that includes cocktails, specialty beers, and wines, all selected by the students. Drinks are included in the ticket price of $65 for the event. The banquet itself features a gourmet menu of dishes based on recipes from famous chefs that have appeared on UNLV's own Chef Lambertz show, This Ain't No Buffet. I don't know what the menu is because it's a surprise. All I can tell you is that you won't be disappointed. To add to the festivities, several items will also be available for silent auction and there will be door prizes.
Dinner, which begins at 7 p.m., is served in the Boyd Dining Room on the 2nd floor of UNLV Hotel College. There will be a reception and Silent Auction at 6. For more information and reservations, call Valerie Nehmer at 702-895-1330 or if you'd rather email her, just type in valerie.nehmer@unlv.edu. You can reserve individual seats or tables for eight people. Major credit cards and checks are accepted, but you better reserve early as seating is limited to 150.
For those of you who like to support the community and like trying something a little different, this is the ticket. Bon appetit!
