What you need to check out in downtown Las Vegas this week

Listen to writers from UNLV’s Masters of Fine Arts program read fiction and poetry at the monthly “Neon Lit” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Writer’s Block, 1020 Fremont St. The series is known for drawing standing-room-only crowds, so get there early. The doors open at 6 p.m. Come back to the downtown book shop at 7 p.m. Saturday for a reading and book signing with J. Aaron Sanders, the author of “Speakers of the Dead: A Walt Whitman Mystery.”

■ More than 20 performers, ranging from the “garden variety juggler” to the “good old-fashioned circus freak magician” will take over the Bunkhouse Saloon stage Friday night for “Las Vaudeville.” This 21-and-older variety show costs $7, and tickets can be purchased online or at the door, 124 South 11th St. It starts at 7 p.m. The theme continues there Saturday with “FuzzyLand,” a circus featuring Tom Rothrock. Tickets are $12, and the show begins at 9:30 p.m.

■ On Saturday, watch “Nerdlesque Burlesque,” described as “Las Vegas’ first burlesque show devoted to nerd and geek culture” at Artifice, 1025 1st St. The monthly show is every third Saturday and is constantly changing themes. It costs $10 to get into the performance area. Entrance to the lounge is free.

■ Watch dancers perform famous scenes from popular ballets on the Container Park stage from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The 45-minute shows feature the Sin City Opera, Miss Nevada and the Las Vegas Academy Musical Theater Department.

■ Put on your thinking cap and play weekly trivia at the Beat Coffeehouse inside the Emergency Arts building, 520 Fremont St., from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

■ Acoustic musicians come to the patio of the Park on Fremont, 506 Fremont St., from 8 to 11 p.m. Thursday. The weekly event is free.
