Downey stars in 'Sherlock Holmes'

Movie: "Sherlock Holmes"

When: Opening Friday at local theaters

Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Mark Strong

Director: Guy Ritchie

The story: In Victorian London, master sleuth Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion, Dr. John H. Watson, match wits with a serial killer who dabbles in the occult.

The buzz: Inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective, this is the second teaming for director Ritchie ("Snatch," "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels") and "Matrix" producer Joel Silver, who also produced Ritchie's "Rocknrolla." It's also Law's second foray into Holmes territory: He previously appeared in a 1991 episode of British TV's "The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes," which starred the actor many consider the definitive Holmes: the late Jeremy Brett.
