Free yourself with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

The voices in Karen O.’s head could fill a gospel choir, and she gives pretty much all of them ample time on the mic.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontlady is an otherworldly vocalist, squeaking and shrieking, cooing and purring, transforming herself from song to song like a method actor inhabiting one role before turning to the next.

“I want to be an alien,” she sings on “Area 52” from the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s latest record, the alternately understated and overblown “Mosquito,” and, true to her aspirations, her voice sounds as if it was beamed in from a galaxy far, far away.

“Free yourself,” O commands later on “Buried Alive,” “that leash is long, long, long.”

Long gone, in her case.
