When you have the stones to title your debut "The Big Roar," you had better bring the noise like a 20-car pileup. And, for the most part, The Joy Formidable lives up to said designation.

The coed Brit trio tempers muscle with melody via rough and tumble riffs and frontlady Ritzy Bryan's knack for hardscrabble hooks. Formidable, for sure.

See The Joy Formidable at 9 p.m. Thursday at the Boulevard Pool at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, 3708 Las Vegas Blvd. South. The show is free; call 698-7000.
