Rock movie 'Runaways' opening Friday

Movie: "The Runaways"

When: Opening Friday at local theaters

Cast: Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning

Director: Floria Sigismondi

The story: In 1975, five teenagers living near Hollywood -- including Joan Jett, Cherie Currie and Lita Ford -- team up with manager Kim Fowley to prove that girls with guitars can overcome a "jailbait rock" image to emerge as a successful concert attraction.

The buzz: Based on former lead singer Cherie Currie's book "Neon Angel," this rise-and-fall rock show casts "Twilight" heroine Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and all-grown-up Dakota Fanning as Currie. (Currie had her own shot at movie stardom, appearing with growing-up child star Jodie Foster in the 1980 "Foxes.") And another ex-child star, "Paper Moon" Oscar-winner Tatum O'Neal, turns up as Currie's mother.
