Sean Penn to appear on Charlie Rose to discuss El Chapo meeting

LOS ANGELES — Charlie Rose says he's landed the first television interview with Sean Penn following the actor's secret meeting with El Chapo.

The "CBS This Morning" anchor announced plans for an upcoming interview with Penn. Rose spoke at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif. on Tuesday, where he was welcomed by his co-anchors Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell.

Rose told the room of journalists that he had met Penn the previous night.

"We are planning to do an interview about his experience and what happened to him and I look forward to that, as soon as all the things can be worked out," Rose said. "We'll be able to sit down and I have a thousand questions for Sean. It's a remarkable story."

Though timing is still up in the air, Rose hopes the interview happens "sooner than later," he said.

"Yes, I"m definitely doing an interview but at what time, we don't know yet. When it will happen will depend on when we can agree on terms of a date of when to do it and that obviously has to do with issues that I'm not familiar with in respect to him," Rose explained. "I'm prepared to do it whenever I get the greenlight from him and his lawyers."

Rose would not detail his Monday night meeting with Penn. "He did ask me to save whatever conversations we had for the interview ... so hopefully that will make the interview interesting," Rose said, adding, "I don't think he'll be doing any other interviews until we sit down."

Penn's meeting with Mexican drug cartel leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera may have led to his capture. Rolling Stone published the first-ever interview with "El Chapo," conducted by none other than the Oscar-winning actor. Penn and Guzman's meeting, during which they discussed producing a film about Guzman's life, helped authorities track Guzman down.

Rose noted that his long-standing relationship with Penn is what allowed him to meet with the actor, who's remained relatively quiet since his El Chapo meeting has been splashed in the news.

"He and I have done interviews on the PBS program for 20 years on everything. I hadn't seen him and I was interested in what happened so I went to talk about that," Rose said. In regards to the El Chapo meeting and Penn's experience with the drug lord, Rose teased, "He and I will have the chance to explore a whole range of things."

Rose's announcement was confirmed by CBS News on Twitter immediately after his comments at TCA.

Penn's interview is not the only high-profile get for the "CBS This Morning Team." Also at TCA, King announced she will conduct a live interview with President Obama and the First Lady at the White House on Super Bowl Sunday. The Super Bowl will air this year on CBS.
