Busy day today and lots to tell you so I might as well get started even though I'd rather just do nothing and waste the whole day. I'm sure all of you have had days like that, but as I get older, I find they become more frequent. Don't tell my boss or he'll think I'm no longer up to the job. I hear rumors he's looking for any excuse to dump me.
Well, it seems like the trend toward a more sexy, sinful Las Vegas is continuing. The newest ultra-lounge on the nightclub scene is Syn City, located in the Riviera's Le Bistro Theater. From 10 p.m. to 4 a.m., Wednesday through Sunday, the joint will be jumpin' with DJs Bryan Wyld and Dynamixx of the Syn City Mechanixx, flare bartenders and the Riv's special bevertainers, Desire, Passion and Climax.
Whew!!
I'm told the party atmosphere promises themed nights with "something for everyone." And I love the Syn City slogan -- "Bring Only Your Temptation!" Here's what you can expect to find. Wild Women Wednesdays feature "wild, crazy contests" for some great prizes. On that night, women get in free and receive $1 drinks all night. If you guys are smart, you'll dress up in drag.
Then there's the Nuts and Bolts Thursdays (I don't even want to go there), Fantasy Fridays and every Saturday night becomes New Year's Eve with a champagne toast and balloon drop filled with more prizes. Exotic fashion shows are featured on Synful Sundays when all female entertainers get in free and receive a Synful Treat. Again, for the ladies, all drinks are a buck. It'll cost you $20 to get in, so, gals, unless some guy is buying your ticket, those drinks are a helluva lot more than a buck.
Not to be outdone, the Rio is launching an all-new, late night, rock n' roll show called "Greg Thompson's Erocktica Live! Sex, Sweat & Rock 'n' Roll," premiering Feb. 18. Do you think the name could be any longer? Thompson, along with choreographer Mistinguett, have produced sexy late-night productions for Playboy, E! Entertainment Television and HBO. The duo currently produces "Skintight" at Harrah's Las Vegas.
"Erocktica is the first show of its kind in Las Vegas," said Thompson, "For starters, we are the first to incorporate a live band into a late-night production show, featuring classic rock 'n' roll from bands like Guns 'N' Roses, Aerosmith, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Journey and Foreigner, just to name a few."
The Mistinguett dancers will be sexier than ever, and some of the hottest rock vocalists in the business will take the stage nightly including the star of "Greg Thompson's Erocktica Live!," Gabriella Versace, who gives new meaning to the expression "totally exposed rock 'n' roll.
"We want audiences to see and hear something fresh, fun and provocative, and this show promises just that," Thompson said. "This is not pretty-boy, showgirl rock n' roll and it is definitely not sexy acrobats. This show is in-your-face, MTV-style classic rock 'n' roll and it's going to be hot." Tickets are $49.95 plus tax and the show runs every night except Tuesday.
D.A.R.E. GALA
Okay, time to cool things down a bit or we'll all be needing a cold shower. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) Program is hosting its national gala at the Rio on Feb. 26. Tim Wilmott, chief operating officer of Harrah's Entertainment Inc., will be honored for his continued contribution to the youth in America.
The reception and silent auction will begin at 6:30 p.m., with dinner, dancing, entertainment and tributes to this year's honoree to follow at 8 p.m. Proceeds from the event will make a significant contribution to the D.A.R.E. program throughout Las Vegas and the United States. Tony Orlando will prove entertainment and comedian/magician Mac King will emcee. Tickets begin at $500 per person, $5,000 per D.A.R.E. Sponsor for a table of 10. This is a great event and you'd be supporting a good cause.
WAR HERO SPEAKS
Here's an item many of you will find of interest. Air Force Capt. Scott O'Grady will recount his war experiences in Bosnia as part of February's Speaker Series at the Silverton on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
Capt. O'Grady was helping enforce the NATO no-fly zone policy in the skies over Bosnia when a Soviet-made anti-aircraft missile slammed into his F-16 plane. O'Grady will tell his incredible story of how he survived in hostile territory for six days before being rescued by the U.S. Marines. Tickets are $30; with a military I.D. it will cost you $20. 'ENTERTAINMENT EXPO FOR KIDS'
Here's something for the kids. Kids, Lenny, you're asking? Amidst the gyrating bodies and bare breasts you're talking about something for kids? Ah, ye of little faith. Las Vegas may be a sexy city, but we like to offer something for everyone and that includes that large group of little people.
Anyway, "The Entertainment Expo for Kids,",a day-long cultural and educational event for children, teens, and young adults ages 5-21, will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Golden Nugget. The Expo will feature workshops and demonstrations and include a trade show for parents and children desiring to learn more about the fine arts and related services including music, dance, art, theatre, acting, modeling, magic, singing and support services.
Admission to the Expo is free. A minimal fee will be charged for some of the workshops to cover the cost of materials. A talent showcase will be throughout the day featuring local performers who will be evaluated by nationally recognized agents and studios seeking new talent.
Registration for the Expo Showcase can be found online at www.callbackexpo.com. The fee to participate in the Showcase is $150 per act and performances should be no longer than eight minutes. Talent buyers from major studios will be attending the Expo from California and Florida, I'm told, so if your little Johnny or Jennifer has any kind of talent, you might want to give them a shot at fame and fortune.
You'll also be able to obtain information on schools and studios that specialize in the fine arts and cultural activities. In addition, the Expo will afford parents direct access to introducing children to the entertainment industry. Sounds like a good deal and a lot of fun.
DESTINATION: LAS VEGAS
Just so you know and can have something to tell your friends over coffee this morning, Las Vegas posted a record 37.4 million visitors last year. And that doesn't include all the people who drive here. As for this year, we expect that record to be broken. If you're wondering about last the 2003 figure, it was 35.5 million.
NEW YORK'S FINEST
If you're like me and love deli food, then your mouth is gonna be watering by the time you finish reading this. You can now sample New York City's finest home-cured pastrami and corned beef right here in out town. Carnegie Deli, a New York City culinary institution since 1937, has opened at The Mirage, its only location outside Manhattan. The menu includes the deli's legendary towering sandwiches, great blintzes and cream pies to die for. As a connoisseur of sandwiches, take my word for it that you won't get any better.
BEST BITES
And not to brag, but in USA Today's year-end round-up of the 20 best meals sampled in the world, Las Vegas came up with two. Number 3 is "tajine-cooked North Sea black
cod in mushroom broth with white truffles" from Seablue at MGM Grand. And the Number18 spot goes to "northern Thai pork stew" from Lotus of Siam. If all this talk of food hasn't made you hungry, you must be anorexic.
Good luck and I'll see you on the Strip.
