Looks like more and more hotels are looking at bringing in headliners for extended stays. The Luxor has just announced that comedian Carrot Top will headline a show indefinitely at the resort beginning Nov. 24.
First we had Gladys Knight at the Flamingo Las Vegas, then Celine Dion at Caesars Palace, followed by Barry Manilow at the Las Vegas Hilton. Another trend developing in our town? Seems so, and one that I applaud. Carrot Top, who has played our hotels for the past 10 years, should do well, as he has developed a cult following with his wacky humor and creative use of props. Plus he's a nice guy as well as talented.
I interviewed him about a year ago and found him to be intelligent, charming and self-effacing. Not that I was surprised, it's just nice to interview someone who gives more than "yes" and "no" answers to everything I ask.
He says he's excited about the move. "Vegas has become such a star-studded vacation destination for celebrities, where else could I be in the center of the biggest resource in the world for new material?" He'll perform in the Atrium Showroom at 8 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday (dark Tuesdays). Tickets are $52.50.
ROCKTOBERFEST
Here's a fun event. The Cannery will host its second annual Rocktoberfest this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, and will feature the Classic Rock All-Stars with special guest Mark Farner, formerly of Grand Funk Railroad. Local rock band The Limey Bar Stewards, who are really good, will open the event with your favorite British invasion songs.
Rocktoberfest will again pay tribute to Munich's Oktoberfest festival with some of the best German beer and a selection of German dishes. It all gets under way at 8 p.m. Tickets are only $10.50, so not only is it a fun time, but a cheap time as well. Can't get any better than that. You can get them at the front desk check-in or by calling 617-5585 or 866-287-4643. If you've got a computer, go to www.cannerycasinos.com.
CALENDAR BOYS
This item is for all you gals. The cast of American Storm will sign 2006 calendars at Borders in Summerlin, 10950 W. Charleston Blvd, 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. The 16-month calendar features the sexy guys in such locations as the Neon Museum, the Old Bottle House and the desert.
'FOREVER' ON CD
For all of you who have seen and loved "Forever Plaid" here's a treat for you. The cast has released a CD of all the great songs from their hit show, including "Three Coins in the Fountain," "Magic Moments," "Crazy 'Bout Ya Baby," "No, Not Much," "Cry," "Rags to Riches" and "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing."
You can purchase the CD at most stores and at the Gold Coast Showroom, where "Forever Plaid -- The Heavenly Musical Hit," is performed at 7:30 p.m. nightly (dark Mondays). If you haven't seen this show, shame on you. One of the best in town.
THE DAN BAND
Here's somebody many of you Californians will be familiar with -- Dan Finnerty and The Dan Band. I love the way they look. Dan dressed as a mechanic with two accountant-styled back-up singers complete with suits and glasses. These guys have been setting the club scene on fire in LA and now will be making their Las Vegas debut at the Aladdin (soon to be Planet Hollywood) on Oct. 1 at 10 p.m. Tickets are a reasonable $29.50, and you can get them at the Aladdin Theatre box office, www.AladdinCasino.com, www.ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster locations. Or you can call (877) 333-9474.
WESTWARD HO CLOSING
Another casino will soon be no more. The Westward Ho will close Nov. 17 and is in the process of being sold. The Westward Ho, which opened in 1965, sits between Circus Circus and the Stardust. No plans yet for its future.
PIETRO'S FAN
I'll wrap this up with a letter from Ed Sherrill of Clemmons, NC, who writes: "Hi Lenny, I just read your current column and really appreciated the write-up on Pietro's. I come to Vegas about four times a year and always make a point of eating at Pietro's. Not only is the food great, but the service is the best I've received in Las Vegas. The prices are reasonable too when you compare to some of the newer "celebrity" chef restaurants. Glad you shared this with your readership."
Thanks, Ed. At least somebody has the same good taste as yours truly. I'm getting a little tired of all these letters I receive asking where they can get good macaroni and cheese. I tell them if they live near a supermarket, pick up a box of Kraft. It's usually less than a buck on sale and is as good as anything we have in our restaurants, so why make a trip here. For what it would cost to come to our town, they could have macaroni and cheese every day for the next year.
Good luck and I'll see you on the Strip. And don't forget to check out www.valleyblogs.com
