Swim-up blackjack at the Tropicana

Remember I told you last week about some great free entertainment at the Tropicana's Celebration Lounge? Well no sooner had the news traveled through cyberspace and into your computers, when I received a call from the Trop to say, "Hold it. The Killjoys won't be appearing." I hear they got a better gig someplace else.

And comedian Jerry Lewis has canceled his appearances at The Orleans due to a mild heart attack he suffered as he was returning from a Friar's Club roast in his honor in New York on Sunday. Lewis, 80, was to appear at the The Orleans July 13-16 and he had just announced plans to direct a Broadway-bound musical adaptation of The Nutty Professor in 2007. He is, however, expected to host his annual Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Telethon at the South Coast casino this September. This will mark the first time in 10 years that it will again be broadcast from Las Vegas.

HOT HANDS, COOL WATER

If you want to keep cool in the pool, but don't want to miss out on the casino's action, the Tropicana has the answer. Once again, it is offering its popular Swim-up Blackjack game located in the main pools. There are two separate blackjack tables that can accommodate up to seven players each, who will be able to dive into the game from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. You can bet anywhere from $5 to $25 a hand and for your convenience, towels are available to keep the players' hands and chips dry.

There's also the Tropics Bar just a splash away so you can sip mai tais, daiquiris, piña coladas, and margaritas while you double down--or drown--whichever comes first. The pool area at the Trop has always been one of my favorites, with its lush surroundings and the 12,000-square-foot, free-form main pool with an island in the middle is one of the most popular on the Strip. This large heated pool and the adult-only Lagoon pool are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Labor Day weekend.

MENOPAUSE

Don't know how many of you have seen Menopause The Musical at the Las Vegas Hilton, but if you haven't as yet, make sure you do. Won't find a funnier show in town. I mention this because Paige O'Hara, who gives a delightful performance as the Soap Star in Menopause, will be taking two days out (July 27 & 28) to fly to New York to film a scene in Disney's Enchanted, starring Susan Sarandon. Ironically, Paige will play a nasty soap star in the movie scene. Congrats to her.

DAD'S DAY DEALS

Hey, still wondering what to get Dad for Father's Day this Sunday? How about taking him to see The Sopranos Last Supper at Krave, where they're making you an offer you can't refuse? Here's the deal. Dad gets free admission with three paid tickets. Pretty nice present seeing that tickets are 95 bucks and there's an Italian gourmet dinner thrown in at the 6 p.m. show. All you have to do is call (702) SEE TONY or show up at the door (they open at 5 p.m.) and ask for the Father's Day Special. One thing to remember, however, is that everyone in your party must be 21 to enjoy the two-hour interactive dinner show that includes comedy, dancing, live music and a good time.

BIG-TIME BULLSEYE

If you're into darts, mark June 28 on your calendar, as that's the date that kicks off the Las Vegas Desert Classic V at Mandalay Bay. The event, which brings the best dart players from Europe and North America to Las Vegas, runs through July 2. Tickets are priced at $22 per day or $55 for an all-session pass, not including applicable service charges and taxes, and you can get them at the Mandalay Bay box office, or charge by phone at Mandalay Bay box office at (702) 632-7580 or Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000. You can also buy them online at www.mandalaybay.com or www.ticketmaster.com.

The tournament, with a purse of $187,000 makes the event the richest paying dart tournament ever to be held in the U.S. It features 32 players, including the top 12 from the PDC World Rankings. The final 16 places will be determined from two qualifying tournaments staged June 26 and June 27. Each day's event has eight players who advance to the first round main draw. The ladies' singles event will qualify four women for the semi-finals, two from each qualifier. The semi-finals will be held following the men's semi-finals on July 1 with the women's final following the men's final on July 2. The Las Vegas Desert Classic Men's Singles event will be televised live on Fox Sports.

MEGABUCKS MISSES

Drats, I missed it again. I was sure Megabucks was mine for the taking once it topped $20 million, but instead, some 64-year-old Las Vegas retiree hit the $20,519,025 jackpot at the Cannery last week. And would you believe it was the second Megabucks® winner the Cannery has had in the last nine months? You remember Elmer Sherwin, the 93-year-old who won his second Megabucks® jackpot - the only person ever to win it twice - at the Cannery in September 2005? Between you and me, he never contributed a dime to the Lenny's Early Retirement Fund.

The new Cannery winner requested anonymity, but said she had played only $12 (doncha hate her?) in the machine - four pulls of the slot handle - when the jackpot hit. "My friend told me, 'Megabucks® is going to hit'," said the winner. "I couldn't believe I had won it." The lucky woman said she plans to use her winnings to pay off her mortgage and possibly buy a new car. Whoa, slow down lady, I'd think twice about buying a new car if I'd won only $20 million. Are you for real?

I'm sorry, but I'm too upset to go on, so I'll just say, Good luck and I'll see you on the Strip. And don't forget to check out www.valleyblogs.com
