Sisters Erica Vences and Elizabeth Hernandez opened their salon, Hair Envy, in November in the Tomsik Plaza at 8221 W. Charleston Blvd., Suite 109.
They began studying cosmetology as teenagers and enjoy a close relationship.
Vences was always interested in hairdressing. Hernandez was more interested in nails — until she saw how much fun her sister was having cutting and styling hair. Now both are stylists.
They had the idea for Hair Envy about a year before the business opened. They were working at another salon and noticed they were the busiest hairdressers there. It seemed more feasible to open their own place and be their own bosses. The idea took root, and they found a location and changed the interior.
Dionisio Meca, a regular patron, said the 1,150-square-foot salon is comfortable.
“You get a real nice haircut,” he said.
Hair Envy carries top product brands, including Matrix, Seacret, Biologe, Paul Mitchell, Johnny B, Joico and Alfaparf Milano. Services include haircuts, color, perms and relaxers, along with waxing and facials, which are done in a separate room that is set off by a glass block wall for light.
That room, along with paint and plumbing, was all it took to transform the space from its previous incarnation, a vitamin store, into Hair Envy. There are six cutting stations, two shampoo bowls and two drying stations.
For running the business, the sisters complement each other’s strengths. Vences handles the day-to-day operations, ordering stock and keeping the books. Hernandez is in charge of personnel and scheduling.
“She’s my only sister,” Vences said. “We went to the same school (Vo-Tech High School, now Southeast Career Technical Academy); we used to live together. Now she’s married. When she’s not here, I miss her.”
