FORMER ASSISTANT TO WARD 6 COUNCILMAN STEVE ROSS DIES

Tuesday James, the former assistant to Ward 6 Las Vegas City Councilman Steve Ross, died April 7. The city honored her memory at the April 15 City Council meeting with a moment of silence followed by bag pipes playing “Amazing Grace.” James was diagnosed with leukemia in October. Her Great Dane Niko won Best of Breed Feb. 17 at the Westminster American Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City.

Her family suggests donations be made in her memory to the Great Dane Club of America Charitable Trust.

CITY COUNCIL NAMES MAYOR PRO TEM

The Las Vegas City Council approved Ward 6 Councilman Steve Ross as mayor pro tem.

The mayor pro tem steps in as mayor when the sitting mayor is unavailable or unable to serve for any reason. Ross was elected to the position by a 7-0 vote by the City Council after being nominated by Mayor Carolyn Goodman.

Ross was first elected to the council in 2005 and was re-elected in 2009 and 2013. He represents Ward 6, including the northwest and Centennial Hills areas.

ALIANTE LIBRARY TO HOST FULL S.T.E.A.M. AHEAD

The Aliante Library, 2400 W. Deer Springs Way, is set to host a monthly program designed for preschoolers and younger elementary-aged students and their parents or caregivers to explore, create and experiment in science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. The 60-minute program incorporates literacy and a variety of hands-on S.T.E.A.M. activities. Sign up at the children’s desk at the library.

AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORING PLANNED AT CIMARRON ROSE COMMUNITY CENTER

The Las Vegas Department of Parks and Recreation is set to offer after-school tutoring at the Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road. CENTENNIAL HILLS HOSPITAL PLANS BABY-SITTING CERTIFICATION CLASS

A baby-sitting certification class is planned from 8 a.m. to noon the second Wednesday of every month at Centennial Hills Hospital, 6900 N. Durango Drive. The four-hour class helps youths ages 11 to 16 gain the knowledge and skills they need to care for infants and children, as well as time to practice these skills in a web-based program.

The cost is $30 per person. The class is to be held in the computer lab on the first floor of the hospital. Class size is limited, and registration is required by calling 702-388-4888.

KIWANIS CLUB WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS
