City offers camps to ensure kids will not be bored during spring break

The Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services will offer spring break camps for youth ages 4 to 15 March 17-21.

Registration for spring break camps open Saturday at the facilities listed below, by telephone and online at Registration will continue until the camps are full.

The following locations offer Kids' Kamp from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., priced at $65 for the first child for the week and $60 for each additional child from the same household. The drop-in price for one day is $20, if space is available.

Youngsters will participate in age-appropriate activities, including sports, games, special events, and arts and crafts under the supervision of trained staff. Children need to bring a sack lunch and snack each day.

Camp locations include:

Becker Community School, 9110 Hillpointe Road, 229-2482. Ages 6-15.

Brinley Community School, 6150 Smoke Ranch Road, 229-2642. Ages 4-15.

Charleston Heights Community School, 6438 Celeste Ave., 229-4440, Ages 6-11.

Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road, 229-1607. Ages 6-11.

Johnson Community School, 340 Villa Monterey, 229-6175. Ages 4-11.

Lied Community School, 5340 W. Tropical Parkway, 229-5072. Ages 6-15.

Molasky Community School, 7801 W. Gilmore Ave., 229-5345. Ages 6-15.

Rafael Rivera Community Center, 2900 E. Stewart Ave., 229-4600. Ages 4-15.

Robison Community School, 4794 Harris Ave., 229-2542. Ages 6-11.

Meanwhile, Camp Odyssey will be offered at three locations March 17-21. Similar to Kids' Kamp in activities, the hours are from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and the fees are $35 per child for the week. The drop-in price for one day is $15, if space is available.

Camp Odyssey locations include:

Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St., 229-6374. Ages 6-11.

Gibson Community School, 3990 W. Washington Ave., 229-5096. Ages 4-15.

Stupak Community Center, 300 W. Boston Ave., 229-2488. Ages 6-11.

Two community centers will host spring break specialty camps with additional activities, which include cooking and two field trips, March 17-21 from 7 am. to 6 p.m., priced at $100 for the first child and $90 for each additional child from the same household.

Locations include:

Mirabelli Community Center, 6200 Hargrove Ave., 229-6359. Ages 6-15.

Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive, 229-1100, Ages 6-11.

The Municipal Pool will offer Splash Camp from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 17-21 for youngsters ages 6 to 11, with activities that include water safety, swimming lessons, water polo, inner tube water polo, diving, synchronized swimming, games and crafts. Splash Camp costs $100 for the week. Excursions are offered for an additional fee.

Children attending Splash Camp need to bring a sack lunch, swimsuit, towel and change of dry clothes each day.


Teens can learn about theater during Rainbow Company event

Rainbow Company Youth Theatre will present a workshop for young people ages 13 to 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Specialized sessions in set design, stage combat, makeup and mime, among others, will be taught by company professionals and guest artists.

The registration fee is $35 and there will be an additional $10 supply fee collected at the beginning of the session. Call 229-6211 to enroll.

Rainbow Company Youth Theatre is a program of the Arts & Community Events Division of the Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services.

Its next production, "Kit Carson's Frontier Adventure," is set for Friday through Feb. 17 at the cultural center.
