Sussing out sugar cubes

Sometimes the simplest things become nearly impossible to locate. When Pamela Moore emailed searching for sugar cubes — complete with the sentiment, “Would you believe I can’t find sugar cubes?” — the first thing I thought of was that they’d fallen out of fashion, which often happens with grocery items.

One disbelieving Taste of the Town regular even emailed to say they’re found in every supermarket. Maybe a few years ago, but not anymore, when so many other sweeteners provide competition for shelf space.

As I do every week, I turned to Taste of the Town readers, who have long demonstrated a talent for sussing out the seemingly unsussable. And sure enough, they came through.

CeCi Schreiber found sugar cubes at Glazier’s Food Marketplace, 8525 W. Warm Springs Road. Lynne Michels, William Seffel and Bob Drabicki reported finding them at Smart &Final at 8485 W. Sahara Ave., 4439 W. Charleston Blvd. and 10050 S. Eastern Ave., respectively. And Richard Markus and Stuart Sato found them at Total Wine &More at 501 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson and 730 S. Rampart Blvd., where Markus said they’re in the condiment section and Sato said they’re there for mixing with absinthe. …

For Barb Cowan, who’s looking for barley egg noodles, Schreiber and Lori Osmany both said they’re available at Glazier’s, and Osmany also found them at Smith’s at 2211 N. Rampart Blvd. …

For Rita Levin, who’s looking for turkey necks for making soup, Ann Brown said they can be found at Sprouts Farmers Market, adding, “she needs to call first since they put them out when they cut up fresh turkeys.” Sprouts has five local stores.

And Jimmy Wike suggested WinCo, which has stores at 80 N. Stephanie St. in Henderson and 6101 N. Decatur Blvd., adding that they’re “the smoked variety, as opposed to fresh, but are excellent for soup.”…

For Alan Bianco, who’s looking for Cento marinated eggplant strips, Artie Zambarano emailed that he recently purchased them at Siena Deli at 9500 W. Sahara Ave. …

And reader Cin Meanor dropped a line to share that when she was looking for chestnuts outside the traditional fall/winter season, she found them roasted and peeled in the kosher section of local supermarkets. …

More on Portuguese sausage: Kara Hierro at Glazier’s said they carry three kinds of Silva sausage, near the meat department.
