RENO -- Washoe County Sheriff Richard Kirkland was seriously injured Saturday in an accident at a Reno disposal transfer station.
Sheriff's Sgt. Mark Caldwell said Kirkland was unloading garbage from his pickup truck at the Reno Disposal Co. site on East Commercial Row when he slipped off the vehicle's tailgate.
He drove himself to Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition with a broken elbow and three fractured ribs.
Caldwell said Kirkland was admitted to the hospital for further evaluation, but his injuries weren't considered life threatening.
