Timing is absolutely crucial in performing a comedy. And the refined art of the cast and crew at New West Theatre brings a delightful production of Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park" to the stage.
The meeting to two vastly different life philosophies provides the humor and the warmth in the work. Tina Marie Moulton is Corie Bratter, newlywed and spur of the moment enthusiast. Her husband, Paul, is more careful. He plans, weighs the pros and cons and then makes his move. Each loves the difference in the other, but friction is a given when the two plan a lifetime together.
In an age where women pursue their own careers, Corie's problems seem superficial and date the play, somewhat. However, Moulton is still able to give Corie's naivete charm and respect. And she sparkles onstage.
Bowd Beal gives a very fine performance as well. Playing the calculating Paul, he conserves his frustration, gradually releasing it until the very peak of the work. Then we love him for his patience, cherish her for enthusiasm and only desire that the two young lovers find their sparks again and enjoy the differences that brought them together.
Moulton and Beal's easy give-and-take is echoed throughout the production. The smooth addition of each new character is the result of Laura Tompkins' excellent direction. There is room for everyone on stage. The personality blend is finely crafted and the resulting ensemble is a tasty treat.
Robert Blomgren, John Corso, Jim Lauster and Susan Blonsky add spice to the production, while giving essential support to the love story. And they prove, the laughs are in the timing.
The cast of "Barefoot in the Park" tickles your funny bone while telling an endearing love story.
