Pete Smith allowed six hits over seven innings as the visiting Las Vegas Stars took a 9-2 Pacific Coast League victory over the Calgary Cannons on Monday.
The Stars moved to 5-6, and the Cannons fell to 3-8.
It was snowing in Calgary before the game. The game-time temperature was 39 degrees.
Paced by Derrek Lee's two-run double, Las Vegas broke the game open in the fifth inning with four runs to lead, 5-1.
Joey Long and Andres Berumen each pitched an inning of shutout relief to secure the victory.
The two teams play again today at 5:05 p.m to wrap up their four-game series. The Stars' Heath Murray (1-0, 3.48 ERA) will face Ramone Morel (0-1, 8.64).
Las Vegas then begins a four-game series at Edmonton on Thursday before returning home Monday against Vancouver.
-- NOTES -- After Saturday's loss at Calgary, Stars second baseman Homer Bush was put on the seven-day disabled list because of a strained right quad muscle, and Berumen was activated. After Sunday's game, shortstop Jorge Velandia was placed on the disabled list with a pulled muscle. Infielder Chad Tredaway was recalled from Class AA Mobile, Ala.
