County redistricting

The explosive growth in parts of the Las Vegas Valley has thrown the balance of representation on the Clark County Commission way out of whack.
      Yvonne Atkinson Gates serves District D, in which 30,213 registered voters live. Meanwhile, Lance Malone represents the rapidly growing northwest, and his District C includes 88,060 registered voters.

Shalmy steps down

The news that longtime Clark County Manager Pat Shalmy is poised to step down from the post came as no shock -- he had telegraphed his intention following the November elections which brought new faces to the County Commission.
      In his 12 years as the county's top executive, the 56-year-old Mr. Shalmy witnessed and grappled with the relentless growth of the Strip and the breakneck urbanization of the unincorporated county. Indeed, one is hard-pressed to find historical parallels for the Las Vegas Valley boom: Los Angeles in the 1960s? Detroit in Henry Ford's era? It must have been a fascinating ride for Mr. Shalmy, as the county's population exploded from 560,000 in 1984 (when his tenure as manager began) to nearly 1.1 million today.
