Drugs and money were the motivations in the slaying of a reputed Las Vegas drug dealer whose decomposed body was found in the desert in July 1995, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
Marty Lee Horne, 33, was arrested in Georgia in May and charged with murder in connection with the death of 28-year-old Thomas Carl Kadlic.
The victim was shot and his body dumped near Pabco and Sunset roads, Deputy District Attorney Michael O'Callaghan told jurors in opening statements of Kadlic's trial.
Witnesses will testify that Horne planned to take Kadlic to a remote area and rob him, O'Callaghan said.
Before the killing Horne faced potential eviction from his apartment where he owed about $700 in rent, the prosecutor said.
Around the time of the slaying he paid off the debt, O'Callaghan said.
The defense will make its opening statement later in the trial before presenting its case in District Judge Don Chairez's courtroom.
