Meadows Village crime tops agenda Sheriff Jerry Keller will appear before the Las Vegas City Council on March 24 to discuss crime in Meadows Village and the department's 1997-98 budget, city officials said Friday. Mayor Jan Jones has criticized the Police Department for its policing of Meadows Village, a neighborhood behind the Stratosphere Hotel that has experienced a recent rash of violence. Five murders and 14 shootings have occurred there since July, Jones said. Meanwhile, police are asking for more money from the city next year. Jones has threatened to delay approval of the Police Department's budget until the city is told how the money will be spent. Police officials deny Jones' charges about their coverage of Meadows Village. At least three officers regularly are on patrol there, according to Capt. Frank Barker, area commander for downtown Las Vegas. Highway Patrol officer
sees I-15 shooting A man was shot in the stomach Friday night on Interstate 15 in what may have been a domestic dispute as a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper stood nearby, authorities said. Trooper Steve Harney said the trooper, whose name was not released, had made a traffic stop on northbound I-15 near Cheyenne Avenue when two cars pulled up behind his vehicle. Harney said that while the officer completed the paperwork for the stop shortly after 8:20 p.m., a man left one vehicle and a woman left the other. As the trooper started to approach the two, the woman shot the man in the stomach with a handgun, Harney said. The trooper, who was not injured, took the woman into custody and called for an ambulance. The shooting victim was listed in critical condition at University Medical Center late Friday. Harney said the North Las Vegas Police Department is investigating the shooting. He said investigators were examining the possibility that the shooting was sparked by a domestic dispute. The names of the shooting victim and suspect were not released.
