Candidates gear up for elections

Prior to the municipal elections this spring, the Review-Journal will publish a weekly list of people who plan to run in various political races in the Las Vegas Valley. The following are those who have announced their candidacies as of Thursday:
     Las Vegas City Council
      Las Vegas City Councilman Matthew Callister has announced he is running for re-election to Ward 4. Callister, 41, has served on the council since 1995. He is a partner in the law firm Callister and Reynolds, where he practices commercial litigation and corporate law. Callister formerly served in the Nevada Legislature, both as an assemblyman and a senator.
     North Las Vegas City Council
      Steve Bergstrom, 43, has announced he is running for City Council. He is a broker with Fortis Investors. Some of his volunteer work includes coaching a youth basketball team. He also has been a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America.
      Joanna Wesley, 45, also has announced she is running for a council seat. She is the owner and operator of a barber and hair stylist shop. She also serves on the Nevada Power Co. Community Advisory panel and is a member of Citizens for Better Transportation.
     Boulder City Council
      Darryl Martin, 48, a computer software designer, is running for City Council. He is a member of the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum and Historical Association Board. He is also secretary of the Youth Advocacy Council.
      Cokie Booth, 52, is also running for a council seat. She is a purchasing agent for St. Rose Dominican Hospital. She has worked as a volunteer for the March of Dimes and is a former Parent Teacher Association president.
