Mountain hikers keep rescuers busy Two hikers climbing the walls of Ice Box Canyon on Sunday at the Red Rock National Conservation Area had to be rescued because they couldn't get down again. George Quiroz and Joe Wilmousky set out on a trail about 11:30 a.m. Sunday and became stuck in the cliffs, officials said. The pair stopped 1,000 feet above the canyon's floor level and yelled to some rock climbers below them for help, rescue officials said. Bureau of Land Management rangers were notified, and police Search and Rescue was called to respond. Neither hiker was injured. Rescuers responded to a second call at 3:30 p.m. to look for two other climbers, whose names were not released. The pair had been expected to return from an outing on Saturday and had not been seen. The men returned before rescue teams could organize to search for them, officials said. Two boys were thought lost in the mountains this weekend. The boys, whose names were not available, had gone mountain biking and were late returning. They were found unharmed, officials said.
Redevelopment agency hires law firm The Downtown Redevelopment Agency has added another outside law firm to its list of attorneys. Its outside legal bills approaching -- if not having exceeded -- the $1 million mark, the agency has agreed to hire the firm Hale, Lane, Peek Dennison, Howard, Anderson and Pearl to represent its interests in the Stratosphere bankruptcy case. Under a contract that expired more than two years ago, Stratosphere was supposed to have transferred title to a run-down community center in Meadows Village to the city. Now, former Stratosphere head Bob Stupak is haggling with the hotel's new owners over the restructuring of the company, a process that bankruptcy court will settle. And city officials fear the community center contract could get lost or altered in the shuffle. The city attorney's office does not have a bankruptcy expert on staff, forcing it to hire outside counsel, said Deputy City Manager Steve Houchens. The city will pay the firm $250 an hour.
