Review-Journal A Nevada Highway Patrol trooper was taken to the hospital early Monday after his patrol car was hit by another vehicle at the intersection of Tropicana Avenue and Pecos Road. The vehicle of Bruce Roper, 29, an eight-year veteran with the Highway Patrol, was hit broadside by a car driven by 20-year-old David Holmes of Las Vegas, trooper Steve Harney said. Roper was taken to University Medical Center and treated for neck and back injuries, Harney said. He is expected to be released from the hospital today. Roper was traveling north on Pecos about 6 a.m. when Holmes, who was traveling east on Tropicana, drove his vehicle into the driver's side of the patrol car in the intersection, Harney said.
Witnesses told investigators the trooper had a green light and that Holmes' Acura ran a red light and appeared to be speeding, Harney said. "Had it hit directly on the driver's door, it would have been a fatality. It totaled out the patrol car. We are very grateful and the officer was very lucky it wasn't more serious than that," Harney said. Holmes was belligerent and refused to take field sobriety tests at the scene, Harney said. He suffered only minor injuries and was treated at the scene and arrested. Holmes was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, where he was given a blood-alcohol test, Harney said. Test results take up to three weeks to come back. Holmes was arrested on charges of felony drunken driving and driving a vehicle that was not insured or registered.
