Review-Journal Cheyenne earned its first two victories of the season, beating Sacred Heart 8-1 and Francis Parker 10-0 to open the Clark Invitational Easter Softball tournament at the Community College of Southern Nevada on Monday. Monique Armstead drove in three runs to lead the Desert Shields against Sacred Heart. Cheyenne, which improved to 2-4, scored eight runs in the second inning to break the game open against Francis Parker. Ginny Schlecht's bases-loaded triple was the big hit of the inning. Basic and Green Valley also won two games at the tournament. Basic beat Kearny and George Washington, while Green Valley had victories against Taft Union and Mira Mesa. Valerie Miller and Jennifer Redding combined on a two-hitter in Basic's 7-6 win over Kearney. Melissa DePoorter went 2-for-3 in Basic's 4-1 victory over George Washington. Crissy Buck scored the winning run as Green Valley defeated Taft Union 3-2. Christy Beckberger went the distance for the Gators, striking out five and walking three. Rachel Mohler was 2-for-2 with a triple. Beckberger went on to shutout Mira Mesa 5-0 in the second game. Buck was 2-for-3 with a home run for Green Valley. Clark and Cimarron each split their first two games. Clark scored five times in the sixth inning to beat South Bakersfield, Calif. 5-4. Brittany Ablahani scored the go ahead run on Summer Ahuna's fielder's choice. Stephanie Italiano, Rebecca Hogan and Melissa Andrews each drove in runs in the inning. In Clark's second game, Del Campo (Calif.) used a grand slam, to beat the Chargers, 9-3. Cimarron-Memorial scored three runs in the fourth inning to beat Francis Parker (Calif.), 3-2. Erin Stordeur threw a three-hitter for the Spartan victory. Patrick Henry then blanked Cimarron, 7-0. -- BASEBALL -- Brandon Splinter's two-run double in the fifth inning lifted Silverado to a 5-3 win over Sprague, Ore. in the Skyhawk Classic at Phoenix, Ariz. With the score tied 2-2, Splinter's double gave the Skyhawks the lead. Pinch-hitter Jose Herrera then doubled home Splinter for the final margin.
At Overton, Rancho picked up three wins in the Moapa Valley Easter Tournament. The Rams got home runs from Larry Pittman and Mike Villa to beat Moapa Valley 7-2 in the first game. Rancho then played Basic and the two teams played to a 3-all tie, but Rancho was awarded the victory because it left more runners on base. Lance Johnson had a home run for the Rams. Rancho beat Lincoln County 4-3 in the third game of the day. Johnson had another home run in that contest. Also at Overton, Eldorado picked up three wins, beating Pahrump Valley Hurricane, Utah and Western's junior varsity . Don Garner and Jess Warren each had home runs in the Sundevils' 11-5 win over Pahrump. Keith Young was 3-for-3 with an RBI. Against Hurricane, Young had a home run to lift Eldorado to a 5-2 win. Warren was the winning pitcher, striking out seven in five innings. Against Western's JV, Brent Tarbett had a home run and two RBIs to lead the Sundevils. At Durango, the Trailblazers opened the the adidas Invitational with wins over Taft and Smoky Hill. Durango beat Taft 16-0, behind Matt McCurdy's three hits and three RBIs. Brandon Perry, David Yancy and Justin Kittrell each had two hits and three RBIs for Durango. Against Smoky Hill, McCurdy singled home Eddie Guerrero in the bottom of the seventh to give Durango a 6-5 win. At San Diego, Calif., Matt Iglitz was 2-for-3 with a home run to lead Boulder City to a 10-5 win over Francis Parker (Calif.) in the Lions Tournament. In the same tournament, Green Valley lost to Gross Mont (Calif.), 4-3. Jimmy Stolberg was 2-for-4 with a triple for the Eagles. Jared Norman went the distance to pick up the victory. -- GOLF -- Durango's Randy Creighton shot a 72 to lead the Trailblazers to a first-round lead at the Green Stick Classic at Sunrise Country Club. Durango, which carded a 390, leads Bishop Gorman (394) and Fountain Valley, Calif. (402). Gorman's Robert Haseman had the second-best individual score, 76, followed by teammate John Carzoo (77) and Durango's Steve Simister (77).
