Animal rights and language are topics of university lectures Animal rights and the English of Western America are among topics presented by the University Forum lecture series at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in April. Bruce G. Friedrich of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals will speak on the topic "Animal Rights for the 21st Century" on Friday. His presentation is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Classroom Building Complex, Room A-106, on the UNLV campus, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. All presentations in the University Forum lecture series are free. In his talk, Friedrich will explore the implications of granting animals equality with humans. "We Are Westerners: The English of Western America in the 20th Century" will be the topic when UNLV professor Thomas L. Clark speaks on April 10. His presentation is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Frank and Estella Beam Hall, Room 241. Clark, a professor of English, last year published a dictionary titled "Western Lore and Language: A Dictionary for Enthusiasts of the American West." In his University Forum presentation, Clark will use slides to illustrate the development of English in western North America. Hollywood actors take on athletes in local benefit softball game The Hollywood All-Stars softball team starts its 18th season vs. the San Francisco 49ers at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cashman Field, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North. All proceeds benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada.

'All in the Timing' to open at college's Black Box Theatre "All in the Timing" opens Friday in the Black Box Theatre on the Community College of Southern Nevada campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and April 11 and 12, with matinees at 2 p.m. April 6 and 13. Tickets are $12.50 general admission, $10 for senior citizens and students. For more information and reservations, call 651-5483. "All in the Timing" is a series of one-act plays about time and timing. They range from black comedy to virtual slapstick and feature the cast in a variety of roles. The director is Brian Strom, a playwright and acting teacher at the college. He previously directed the Rainbow Company's production of "Tom Sawyer" and New West Theatre's "Mass Appeal" and "Moby Dick." Lucinda Neal is vocal and assistant director, with set design by Kris Van Riper. The cast includes Peter James, Tim Clark, Kirk Stowers and Martha Somers.
