Police seek man who may help investigation Las Vegas police have released a sketch of a man wanted for questioning in a fatal shooting in January. Sgt. Ken Hefner said Louis Lozano, 20, was shot to death at the intersection of Eastern and Mesquite avenues on the night of Jan. 10. Police found Lozano on a sidewalk. He was taken to University Medical Center, where he died a short time later. Hefner said Lozano and an unidentified man argued at a convenience store at the intersection of Eastern and Bonanza Road shortly before the shooting. The unidentified man is thought to be in his 20s, with a dark complexion and thin build. He was last seen wearing a black baseball cap and black jacket. A friend of Lozano's who was with the victim the night of the shooting provided information that was used last week to create a composite sketch. Anyone who recognizes the man or who has information about Lozano's death may call police at 229-3521 or Secret Witness at 385-5555. Tipsters with valuable information could be eligible for a $1,000 reward. No crime involved in parachuting death RENO -- No evidence of criminal wrongdoing was found regarding the on-duty status of a Reno police officer who died in a 1996 parachute accident, the Nevada attorney general's office has concluded. At the urging of its insurance carrier, the city of Reno asked the office for a criminal investigation into whether Keith Hashimoto was on duty at the time and whether a supervisor improperly signed his time sheet. Hashimoto was on duty, the report concluded. Police Chief Jim Weston has confirmed Lt. Rick Saulnier signed the card and Weston authorized his on-duty status. "This in and of itself is not unusual and is a regular procedure for employees unavailable to sign their timecards," the report found. Because of his on-duty status at the time, Hashimoto's widow, Carole, and two daughters will get $1.2 million from the insurance carrier over 40 years if Carole Hashimoto doesn't remarry.
The report listed five recommendations for tightening the city's timecard procedures. Hashimoto was killed March 29, 1996, while parachuting with Navy Seals at the Fallon Naval Air Station in a training exercise. Parachute training for Reno SWAT team members was suspended following the accident. Ethics chairwoman arrested in Reno RENO -- Mary Boetsch, chairwoman of the Nevada Ethics Commission, has been arrested on a drunken driving charge. The Nevada Highway Patrol said Boetsch was spotted driving erratically late Wednesday on Interstate 80 in west Reno. Troopers said she failed a field sobriety test and requested a breathalyzer test, which registered 0.179 and 0.174 percent. The state's legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.10. Boetsch was released from the Washoe County Jail on her own recognizance about 6 a.m. Thursday. Boetsch, a former Washoe County prosecutor, was appointed to the commission in 1994. Robber makes off with Caesars money STATELINE -- Authorities were searching Saturday for a robber who made off with an undisclosed amount of cash from a casino cage at Caesars Tahoe. Douglas County sheriff's deputies said the man escaped with the cash Friday night after walking up to the cage and displaying a handgun. The suspect was described as a man in his late 20s with dark hair in a crew cut. He fled the casino on foot and was last seen wearing black pants, a black jacket and black tennis shoes. Reno school gets clean bill of health RENO -- Huffaker Elementary School, closed for a week earlier this month by a mysterious odor, has been given a clean bill of health. A final report by environmental consultants concludes there's no health hazard at the year-round school and it's safe to occupy. The odor reported by staff members is gone and classes are set to resume April 7 after students return from a scheduled three-week break. The school was closed the week of March 10 after the odor caused several staff members and students to complain of various symptoms. The odor resembled nail polish remover. A test of air, bacteria and microorganism samples failed to detect the source of the odor.
