Women's tennis team falls to Sun Devils

The No. 14 UNLV women's tennis team lost 7-2 to No. 6 Arizona State on the final day of the round-robin Lady Rebel Challenge on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.
      At the top singles spot, 13th-ranked Reka Cseresnyes of Arizona State outlasted No. 11 Marianne Vallin, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.
      Gee Gee Garvin collected the only singles victory for UNLV (12-3) with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Katy Propstra.
      The Sun Devils swept their three opponents in the tourna- ment to improve to 13-2.
      UNLV (12-3) returns to action Friday at home against Fresno State.
      -- MEN'S TENNIS -- At Santa Barbara, Calif., the No. 29 Rebels defeated No. 45 Colorado 5-0 to advance to the final of the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.
      The Rebels will meet No. 34 Harvard today for the championship. Harvard stunned No. 2 Boise State 4-0 in the semifinals.
      Asaf Tishler, Julius Pohjola, Tim Blenkiron and Yoav Loewenstein swept their singles matches for UNLV (13-4). The remaining two singles matches were canceled.
      -- SOFTBALL -- At Fresno, Calif., UNLV split a doubleheader with second-ranked Fresno State on Friday night.
      Fresno State won the first game 6-1 thanks to a 15-hit attack. The Rebels captured the second game 5-2 behind the six-hit pitching of Brandi Isgar.
      UNLV scored all five of its runs in the fifth inning as it dealt the Bulldogs just their third loss at home this season.
      The Rebels are 16-14 and 7-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs are 32-5 and 9-3.
      -- BASEBALL -- At Wilson Stadium, San Diego State pounded out 27 hits en route to a 22-1 victory over the Rebels.
      Aztecs right fielder Andy Bevins went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Aztecs (21-9-1, 5-5 Western Athletic Conference). Former Durango standout Ryan Ludwick hit his eighth homer for Rebels' lone run. UNLV dropped to 18-15, 4-6.
      -- SWIMMING -- At Minneapolis, UNLV's Erik Scalise and Mike Mintenko finished 25th and 35th, respectively, on the final day of the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving championships.
      Scalise had a time of 15 minutes, 34.76 seconds in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Mintenko was clocked at 44.63 in the 100-yard freestyle.
