Jana Burleson of Johnson Middle School and Christopher Walker of Green Valley High School were honored Sunday night as two of 104 top youth volunteers at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., attended by former President Carter.
The two local teen-agers were named Nevada's top high school and middle-level student volunteers by a state judging panel in February. The honor earned them each $1,000 and this week's expenses-paid trip to the nation's capital.
To win his honor, the 17-year-old Walker developed a sound system that provides music and voice stimulation to newborns with complications, a method intended to help comfort babies who cannot be physically touched.
After months of extensive research and with a doctor's guidance, Walker sent a proposal for the system, called "Operation: Good Vibrations," to companies that produce hospital incubators, and one manufacturer has expressed interest in pursuing his concept.
For her part, 13-year-old Burleson volunteered at the Variety School for mentally and physically challenged students, playing sports with them.
