Cheyenne High School's softball team missed its first chance to clinch a playoff berth Monday against Bishop Gorman.
Tuesday against Durango, Kolbi Clothier made sure it didn't happen again.
Clothier was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs to lead the Desert Shields to a 5-3 victory over Durango, clinching fourth place and the final Sunset Division spot in the Southern Conference playoffs.
"I was proud of our team, especially with the way the game with Gorman got away from us," Cheyenne coach Pat Beckwith said. "They could have wrapped it up right there. Instead, they came to play and did what was necessary to win it."
Cheyenne (12-12, 8-6 division) will open the Southern Conference tournament Tuesday at 2 p.m. against Sunrise champion Green Valley at Sunset Park.
The other first-round matchups, also at 2 p.m. Tuesday, are Basic vs. Cimarron-Memorial, Eldorado vs. Bonanza and Chaparral vs. Sunset champion Silverado.
Durango (12-10, 6-8), which finished fifth, could have tied Cheyenne with a victory.
Cheyenne took a 2-1 lead in the third on Clothier's solo home run. It stayed that way until the seventh, when Clothier hit a two-run double during a three-run rally that put the Desert Shields up, 5-1.
Cheyenne needed those runs, as Durango came back to score two in the bottom of the inning, then had a runner on third and all-division shortstop Angie Kitchen at the plate as the tying run.
Kitchen flew out to center field to end the game.
At Cimarron-Memorial, Silverado's Tiffany Finateri and LaMeka Anderson combined to shut out the Spartans, 7-0.
At Clark, Stephanie Italiano drove in two runs with a pair of doubles, and Rebecca Hogan hit a three-run homer in the Chargers' 9-5 victory over Bishop Gorman.
Clark scored all nine of its runs in the first two innings.
At Rancho, Rachel Mohler was 4-for-4 with two home runs and six RBIs to lead Green Valley over the Rams, 14-2.
At Las Vegas, Jen Redding struck out 13 and tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Basic over the Wildcats, 6-0.
At Valley, Maisey Corrington was 2-for-3 with a homer as Eldorado beat Valley, 12-1.
At Western, Ivy Robertson had a pair of doubles to lift Bonanza over the Warriors, 9-4.
-- GOLF -- At Las Vegas Municipal, Bonanza's Scott Piercy fired a 31 from the back tees to lead the Bengals over Western, 177-190.
Bonanza's Billy Harvey and Western's Jesse Richards shot 34.

Five other golfers shot sub-40 scores: Gorman's Tyler Mays (37), Chris McHugh (38) and Zach VanCleve (39); and Silverado's Brad Callihan (37) and Jason Rowland (38).
At Painted Desert, Durango edged Cimarron-Memorial, 197-200.
Randy Creighton's 38 paced Durango, which also got 39s from Ed Terlitzky and Tyler Nielsen.
Cimarron's Michael Russell was medalist at 35.
Mojave, which also participated, shot 306 and was led by Matt Jolley's 41.
At Paiute, Cheyenne got its first Sunset Division victory on a scorecard playoff against Clark. Both teams shot 228, but Cheyenne won with a better score from its sixth man.
Cheyenne's Levi Rogers and Clark's Josh Ahuna and Dan Smith shared medalist honors with 43s.
At Sunrise Vista, Avi Khitri shot a match-low 34 as Green Valley beat Rancho, 184-282.
At Las Vegas Country Club, Troy Mitchell's 43 led Las Vegas to a 238-264 victory over Eldorado.
The Sundevils' Mark Kohut was medalist at 41.
At Sunrise, Boulder City's Jay Mickey earned medalist honors with a 38 as the Eagles beat Chaparral, 205-235.
