College dance concert scheduled

Site Map

The Community College of Southern Nevada Dance Program will present a concert rich in cultural and stylistic diversity at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Nicholas Horn Theatre on campus, 3200 E. Cheyenne Ave.
Joining the CCSN Dance Ensemble will be the critically acclaimed Desert Dance Theatre from Phoenix in a production of "Sister Moses: The Story of Harriet Tubman."
This dance/drama incorporates dramatic narration, a choral ensemble, African drums and a string quartet. "Sister Moses" is about Harriet Tubman, a courageous black woman who helped develop the Underground Railroad, leading hundreds of people out of slavery and into freedom.
Filling out the evening will be two world premieres by dance program director Kelly Roth. "The Emperor's Nightingale," with music by Igor Stravinsky, updates the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale. Performed by the CCSN Dance Ensemble, this work alludes to the current national debate of public funding of the arts. The program opens with Roth's kinetically confrontational "Cost," created especially for Desert Dance Theatre.
Tickets are $8 general admission and $5 for students and seniors. For details or reservations, call 651-5483.
