     New Jersey woman
     falls to her death

A New Jersey woman fell 500 feet to her death at Zion National Park in Southern Utah while hiking with her husband.
It was the third accidental death this year at Zion, about 150 miles northeast of Las Vegas. No deaths were reported there in 1996.
The National Park Service reported that Patricia Jane Bottarini, 36, of Medford was hiking at 12:30 p.m. Friday with her husband, James, on the trail to Observation Point at the upper end of Zion Canyon.
Bottarini's husband was hiking in front and did not see her fall. The accident is under investigation.

     Real estate secretary
     wins $1.7 million

A 48-year-old real estate secretary from Idaho was in the right town when she won $1.7 million playing a slot machine.
Linda Hewlett of McCall hit the jackpot Friday on a Cool Millions Quarters progressive machine in Jackpot, about 500 miles north of Las Vegas on the Idaho border.
To win her prize, Hewlett spent $30 before lining up three ducks on the machine at Cactus Pete's. She said she and her husband were at the hotel to see a Charlie Daniels concert.
She said she would use the winnings to send her granddaughter to basketball camp, then see her broker.

     Police seek men who
     robbed jewelry store

Las Vegas police are looking for four men who robbed a jewelry store at gunpoint Saturday morning, making away with "a large amount" of jewelry.
Police said one of the men, posing as a customer, entered The Jewelers, 2400 Western Ave., near the intersection of Martin Luther King and West Oakey boulevards, around 11:45 a.m.
After several minutes, three more men entered the store with handguns and told the clerks and customers to lie on the floor. The men then broke glass cases and scooped up the jewelry.
Police said one of the men fired several rounds at an employee but missed him. A customer was cut by flying glass.
The robbers left the store in a black-and-gray Chevrolet Astro van that was reported stolen in Los Angeles Thursday. The van was found in the 1900 block of Highland Drive.
