RENO -- The lawyer for a high school student accused of killing a classmate says he has received a threatening letter from the slain student's father.
John Ohlson, who represents Galena High student Conor Harris, said he has notified the U.S. attorney's office about the letter from William Jac Shaw, father of Alison Shaw.
"It sure looks like (a threat) to me," said Ohlson, who has applied for a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
The letter notes Ohlson took on the case voluntarily and questions whether it was for money or fame.
"Voluntary acts and their consequences are strange things sometimes," the letter says. "Call or write sometime if you have questions -- better yet -- maybe I'll run into you sometime."
Shaw, a Minden lawyer, couldn't be reached for comment. But his lawyer, Cal Dunlap, said he spoke to him and the letter was not a threat.
"It's an expression of a feeling that is almost universally held by the parents of victims of murder," Dunlap told the Reno Gazette-Journal.
"It's rare that the parents of a victim of murder don't feel animosity towards the lawyer representing the person charged with murder," he said.
Harris, 18, a starting linebacker on Galena's football team last fall, has pleaded innocent to a charge he murdered Alison Shaw on March 27 at a park near campus.
The 17-year-old girl suffered more than 80 knife wounds. The two had been boyfriend and girlfriend.
Ohlson said the letter arrived by mail and he has asked for a probe into whether it violated federal laws. He said he also intends to ask local authorities if the letter violated state law.
Washoe County District Attorney Richard Gammick said Ohlson should file a police report if he thinks it's a threat.
