Rondina ends career; UNLV splits

Kim Rondina homered and drove in four runs in her final Rebels contest as the UNLV softball team salvaged the second game of its doubleheader with a 12-1 victory over New Mexico on Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.
      The Lobos won the first game 2-1 in eight innings.
      For the first time in seven seasons, the Rebels will not participate in postseason action. UNLV ends its campaign at 26-28 overall and 17-15 in its first Western Athletic Conference season.
      New Mexico finishes at 19-38, 9-23 in the WAC South Division.
      Rondina, a two-time All-America shortstop, went 5-for-6 in the doubleheader to increase her school record for career hits to 287. Despite missing eight games this season with an injured hand, Rondina led the nation in home runs with 15. In WAC competition, Rondina hit a league-leading .525 (32-for-61) with six homers and 21 RBIs.
      Rondina, Nicole Miller, Amy Alves, Julie Crandall and Keao Chang each scored twice in second game. Miller added two hits.
      UNLV's Tanya Edwards (8-3) allowed one earned run and six hits to earn the victory.
      -- GOLF -- At Ardmore, Okla., top-ranked UNLV is looking up at five teams after the second round of the Maxwell Tournament, played at the par-70, 6,442-yard Dornick Hills Country Club.
      The Rebels shot consecutive 289s in the first two rounds for a 578 to fall into sixth place, 15 strokes behind Oklahoma State. The Cowboys have four players in the top six, led by Edward Loar at 2-under-par 138.
      Ted Oh leads Rebels with a 1-over-par 141, followed by Mike Ruiz (145), Gilberto Morales (146), Jeremy Anderson (148) and Bill Lunde (149).
      The Rebels conclude the tournament and regular season today.
      -- BASEBALL -- At Wilson Stadium, UNLV blew an early 5-1 lead and lost to New Mexico, 8-6.
      Lobos reliever Joe Abell (2-0) pitched five innings of four-hit ball to pick up the victory. Rebels starter Tista Perri (3-8) took the loss.
      The Rebels (24-30, 10-18 WAC South) were led offensively by Chris Adolph (4-for-5) and Ryan Hankins (3-for-4, two RBIs). Robert Gonzalez homered and drove in three runs to pace the Lobos.
      UNLV concludes its season today at home against New Mexico at 1:05 p.m.
