A fatal accident on Interstate 15 Thursday afternoon held up traffic for miles and caused several other minor accidents.
A northbound pickup truck carrying four construction workers blew a front tire at about 12:24 p.m. and rolled over just after the intersection of Craig Avenue and Interstate I5, highway patrol spokesman Steve Harney said.
The driver of the truck died at the scene. His name was not released pending notification of relatives.
Harney said the other three passengers suffered minor injuries and were transported to University Medical Center. They are Jesus Torres, 40, Sergio Galarza, 29, and Alejandro Sierra, 24, all of Las Vegas. All three were listed in good condition Thursday afternoon.
Another accident occurred as cars were slowed and diverted away from the accident scene.
An 84-year-old man, James Jarvis, of Sun City, Calif., was traveling north on I-15 and his vehicle collided with the rear of a car driven by Tarquette Perry, 66, of Chandler, Ariz. Jarvis' car careened off Perry's car and hit an ABC Union Cab taxo driven by Penny Tarragano, 36.
A passenger in the taxi, whose name was not known, was transported to UMC with back and neck injuries. She was in stable condition, Harney said.
Jarvis suffered minor injuries and was cited on a charge of failure to use due care near an accident scene, Harney said.
Three other accidents resulted from the traffic pile-up, all of them resulting in minor vehicle damage.
In the first accident, a 40-gallon propane tank, apparently not tied down, flew off the back of the pickup and started to leak. The leak, Harney said, was the reason traffic was halted.
