Associated Press CARSON CITY -- Bagpipes echoed through the Nevada Capitol on Thursday as Gov. Bob Miller signed a bill proclaiming April 6 as Tartan Day in Nevada. "I am happy to sign this bill in recognition of an important part of Nevada's heritage," Miller said. AB362 establishes Tartan Day and recognizes the contributions of Scots to the development of America.
Scottish immigrants were responsible for many of Nevada's early mining operations. Crowded into Miller's office were 22 Scots and Scottish Americans from six clan organizations and two Scottish cultural groups. "We will celebrate April 6 every year in true Scots fashion," said J.J. MacDonald, a member of Clan Donald who attended the ceremony. Also on hand were representatives from the North Lake Tahoe Lions Club, which will be sponsoring a Celtic festival this July.
