Gambling age bill goes before House

     Associated Press

PHOENIX -- A measure endorsed by the state House would raise Arizona's minimum gambling age to 21 from 18, but not until the last of existing state American Indian gaming pacts expire in 2003.
The bill (HB2134) was approved by voice vote last week. Approval by a formal vote as early as Tuesday would send it to the Senate.
The measure would apply to gambling in tribal casinos, betting at horse and dog tracks and playing the Arizona Lottery.
The House rejected an amendment to exempt the lottery, with Rep. John Loredo, D-Phoenix, arguing that adults old enough to vote and serve in the military should be able to buy a lottery ticket.
The lottery's acting director told a legislative committee last week he was comfortable with the bill. because it treated all gambling alike and that the delayed timing would give his agency time to adjust.
