NEWSMAKERS
-- Randy Reese, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Reese of Las Vegas, recently scored 179 out of 180 on the Law School Admission Test. Reese is in his third year at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He is scheduled to graduate magna cum laude in May. During his time at Georgetown, Reese has served as an intern in Sen. Richard Bryan's office; worked as a marketing and public relations intern at Be As You Are Inc.; and as a marketing representative for Beyond the Wall Inc. Mirage Resorts awarded him an internship this past summer in their corporate internal audit department. He has also worked the past three summers at Macy's to help finance his education. Reese is in the process of applying to several top law schools and plans to pursue a career in corporate law. Reese is a 1995 graduate of Bishop Gorman High School. -- Black Beauty Ranch & Equestrian Center recently teamed up with the Drinkers of the Wind Trail Riding Club to sponsor a 10-mile charity trail ride. More than 45 riders collected more than $5,000 in donations for the Saint Jude Children's Cancer Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The two groups hope to make the charity trail ride an annual event. -- Brandon Hadland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hadland of Las Vegas, was recently named as an outstanding national campus leader in the 1997 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges."
Hadland is a senior at Harvey Mudd College, majoring in chemistry. He was selected for the honor by the college's Dean of Students staff based on information provided through self-nomination; grade point average; class ranking; and history of campus leadership activities. Another Las Vegas resident to be named in the publication was Steven Welch, son of Yueh-Ching Welch. Welch is also a senior and also majoring in chemistry. Harvey Mudd College, one of the Claremont Colleges in Claremont, Calif., is a coeducational institution of engineering, science, and mathematics that also places strong emphasis on humanities and the social sciences. -- Rhonda Hawkins of Amil International of Nevada recently received the Nurse of the Year award in Case Management from the March of Dimes Foundation. Hawkins, the only recipient to come from a managed health care organization, is Amil's supervisor of medical management. Hawkins, who experience in nursing ranges from oncology to orthopedics and pain management, was one of 219 Southern Nevada nurses nominated for the award. Of those, only 14 were honored with the nurse of the year title.
