IN BRIEF
Fire causes $250,000 in damage to home Fire damaged an expensive home in southeast Las Vegas on Saturday. Clark County Fire Department spokesman Steve La-Sky said the single-alarm blaze at 2121 Geronimo Way, near Eastern Avenue and Flamingo Road, started shortly after 11 p.m. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish the fire, which caused $250,000 in damage. One firefighter was treated at the scene for exhaustion. "Flames lit up the sky," La-Sky said. "It was an elaborate home with chandeliers, a grand piano inside. It may be a second residence for the owners." Late Sunday, authorities were trying to identify the owners. Fire damage was limited to the southeast portion of the 7,000-square-foot residence, but smoke and water damage occurred throughout. "The fire appears to have started in an upstairs bedroom," La-Sky said. "It was a nice place, easily a half-million dollar home. They might be able to save a portion of the structure." Investigators were trying to identify the cause of the fire. La-Sky said authorities have not uncovered any evidence indicating the blaze was set.
Indiana man killed in highway rollover An Indiana man was killed and two others seriously injured in an accident Saturday on U.S. Highway 95, about 16 miles north of Las Vegas. Nevada Highway Patrol trooper Steve Harney said that at 4 p.m., a pickup traveling south on U.S. 95 entered the median. The vehicle went into a skid and overturned several times. Two passengers in the truck who were not wearing seat belts, Lee Northern, 29, and Tammy Rusch, 37, both of Evansville, Ind., were thrown from the truck. The driver of the vehicle, Stephen Wainman, 33, of Las Vegas, was wearing his seat belt and remained inside the cab. All three were taken to University Medical Center, where Northern died at 9:02 p.m. Saturday. Rusch was listed in critical condition Sunday, and Wainman was listed in serious condition. "We don't know what they were doing at the time or where they were headed because we haven't been able to talk to anybody involved," Harney said. An investigation is continuing.
