Matt Williams of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Todd Stottlemyre of the St. Louis Cardinals headline a UNLV baseball alumni weekend that has a decidedly professional flavor.
Three games will be played at Earl Wilson Stadium this weekend, two of them featuring pro players who once played for the Rebels.
The weekend series will open at 10 a.m. today with alumni from even years playing those from odd years.
Then, at 1 p.m., major leaguers Williams and Stottlemyre will be joined by Brian Boehringer (San Diego Padres), Eric Ludwick (Florida Marlins) and T.J. Mathews (Oakland Athletics) in a game against the 1998 UNLV baseball team. Minor-league players Stacy Kleiner (Cardinals) and Mike Bauder, Tom LaRosa and Nate Yeskie (all of the Minnesota Twins) will play for the major-league team.
Sunday at 1 p.m., the professional alumni players will face a team of baseball celebrities, including four-time Cy Young Award winner Greg Maddux. Other scheduled celebrity participants include Marty Barrett, Bo Belinsky, Bob Didier, Bill Doran, Billy Hatcher, Tom Hausman, George Hendricks, Mike Maddux, Charlie Moore, Phil Plantier, Tim Raines, Mel Stottlemyre Sr. and Mark Sweeney.
Admission to Saturday's two games is free, while there will be a charge of $5 for adults and $3 for children for Sunday's game. Fans also can purchase a $15 general admission ticket for Sunday's game, which will include a barbecue dinner afterward.
The weekend will conclude Monday with the UNLV Celebrity Golf Tournament at Canyon Gate.
Proceeds will go toward construction of a baseball clubhouse along the third-base line at Wilson Stadium.
