Southern California brush fire 90 percent contained
Associated Press JULIAN, Calif. -- A prescribed fire that grew to about 2,100 acres was 90 percent contained Friday, officials said. The California Department of Forestry hoped to have the blaze under full control by this afternoon, a spokeswoman said. Officials set the fire Wednesday as a way to clear brush that could fuel wildfires later in the season. It quickly jumped out of Bureau of Land Management fire lines.
The fire was in the Chariot Mountain area about 5 miles northeast of Julian, a small mountain town 60 miles northeast of San Diego. It was burning away from the town, and no structures were threatened. Three firefighters reported minor injuries. The fire is estimated to have consumed more than $750,000 in firefighting funds. It was not immediately known what caused the blaze to go out of control.
