Firemen battle blaze at recycling plant
Cause of fire not yet determined
By Carri Geer Review-Journal
A two-alarm blaze kept firefighters busy Friday afternoon at Nevada Recycling in northeast Las Vegas, the site of two other fires since 1991. Clark County Fire Department spokesman Bob Leinbach said Friday's fire broke out around 2:30 p.m., and its cause had not been determined by that evening. Firefighters doubled their response to the fire about 20 minutes after it started. Leinbach said North Las Vegas, Nellis Air Force Base and county firefighters helped put out the blaze. The spokesman said most of the flames were extinguished within about half an hour, but he expected firefighters to continue monitoring the site throughout the night. The fire burned vehicle debris and two rail cars used to remove the debris from the business at 5000 Range Road, near Craig Road and Las Vegas Boulevard North, Leinbach said. He said the debris had little value, but no damage estimate had been determined as of Friday evening.
Leinbach said wind and a lack of nearby water added to the difficulty of fighting the fire. In August, exploding tires and gasoline tanks kept firefighters at bay as they tried to put out another two-alarm blaze at the junkyard. That fire destroyed a $1 million metal shredder and charred tons of scrapped cars. The business, which opened in 1974, also was rocked by a propane tank explosion during an accidental fire in May 1991. Investigators said that fire may have been started by a burning scrap of paper or a discarded cigarette.
