Officer pleads guilty in fatal accident
Review-Journal The Las Vegas policeman whose patrol car struck and killed local magician Anthony "Chappy" Brazil has pleaded guilty to two counts of careless or imprudent driving. Edward Jones, 35, will have to pay a $2,000 fine and take a police course in driving safety. The charges filed last Wednesday are both misdemeanors, the equivalent of two traffic tickets. He entered the plea Friday before Justice of the Peace William Jansen and will return to court Sept. 24 to furnish proof he has taken the course.
Jones was on his way to answer an emergency call on June 27 when his car crossed the center line on Industrial Drive and hit Brazil's motorcycle. According to prosecutors, the officer was driving at between 57 and 90 mph in a 35 mph speed zone. Brazil worked at Caesars Palace as a magician. Jones, who has been on the force for two years, was one of two officers involved in the September 1996 fatal shooting of a man who ran toward them carrying two steak knives. A Clark County coroner's inquest ruled that shooting justified. After the charges were filed in the accident Sheriff Jerry Keller suspended Jones for a month without pay.
