Rather than give up or react with anger, these students should seize the challenge to improve their skills to ensure they acquire the knowledge necessary to pass the test on the second try.State education officials promised the newly revamped test would be more difficult than its predecessor and the passing scores more demanding. The failure rate on the reading section was 30 percent higher than in 1997, while the failure rate for the math questions jumped a whopping 86 percent.
