IN BRIEF

     Group to file petition
     for recall election

A citizens group plans to file a petition today intended to trigger a recall election on embattled Clark County Commission Chairwoman Yvonne Atkinson Gates.
Charles Bennion of Citizens for Honest and Responsible Government said Wednesday that the group had collected more than the 4,380 signatures needed to spark an election. The group will submit the petition at 2 p.m. to the Office of the Registrar of Voters, he said.

Atkinson Gates, who represents portions of North Las Vegas and downtown Las Vegas, was in Washington, D.C., and unavailable for comment Wednesday. Bennion's group complained that Atkinson Gates' ethical behavior had let down voters who re-elected her by a landslide in 1996.
The registrar's office now must check the validity of the signatures and could schedule an election in June if they are valid.
Atkinson Gates was reprimanded in January by the state Ethics Commission for lobbying casino executives to give her a lease deal on a proposed daiquiri-stand business.
Republican chiropractor Terry Akers has announced he would run against Atkinson Gates, a democrat, if a recall occurs.

Official says local man died from chicken pox

A Clark County Health District official confirmed Wednesday that a local man died this week from chicken pox.
Fatal cases of chicken pox are extremely rare in Las Vegas, according to the official, epidemiology nurse June Constantino.
Family members said Daniel Danko, 55, died Tuesday from the disease.
"When you have chicken pox over the age of a teen-ager, you're sick," Constantino said, noting that the virus that causes chicken pox is a member of the herpes virus family.
"The main thing we're telling people is there is a vaccination available for children and adults. It's a good idea if you haven't had the disease to get immunized," she said.
