-- The Junior League of Las Vegas recently installed the organizations 1999-2000 board of directors at its annual luncheon. Members of the new board are Helen Klatt, president; Donna Levy, president-elect; Shenandoah Merrick, administrative vice president; Denyce Tuller, community vice president; Lisa Riggleman, fund development vice president; Kristina Swallow, finance vice president; Theresa Minden, recording secretary; Susan Kabut, treasurer; and Jennifer Mallinger Young, Desiree Joseph and Michele Benda, members at large. The Junior League of Las Vegas is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and to improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. -- Michele Taylor, the director of campus community development at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, has been selected as the recipient of the 1999 President's Outstanding Staff Member of the Year Award. Taylor has worked at UNLV since 1990. She also represents the professional staff on UNLV's faculty senate and chairs the campus' professional staff committee. -- Bunny Briggs, a Las Vegas resident and tap dancer, was recently honored at Tap Extravaganza '99 in New York City.
Briggs received a Flo-Bert Award for Lifetime Achievement in Tap Artistry. The Flo-Bert Award is named after entertainers Florence Mills and Bert Williams. An international cast of tap dancers and jazz musicians performed a tribute to Briggs and his fellow honoree, Brenda Bufalino. Briggs began his career in the '20s in New York. Known as "Duke's Dancer," his tapping can be heard on the recording of Duke Ellington's "Concert of Sacred Music." Briggs was also nominated for a Tony award for his featured role in "Black and Blue." Briggs was presented with the award by his co-star in "Black and Blue," Buster Brown. -- The Las Vegas chapter of the American Society for Industrial Security recently held their third annual Law Enforcement Appreciation breakfast to commemorate National Police Week. This year's recipients were Officer David Deuel, Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety, Division of Parole and Probation; Officer Larry Lawson, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Traffic Section; Officer Solia McKay, Las Vegas Paiute Tribal Police Department; and Master Sergeant James Potter, United States Air Force, Nellis Air Force Base. According to Bill Tullock, chairperson of the Law Enforcement Liaison Committee, the officers were recognized for their day-to-day work ethics. Each of the officers that were honored were identified by their supervisors and peers as being the very best at their jobs.
